Posteo Review
Posteo is the most principled email service in Europe: EUR 1 a month, anonymous payment, full-mailbox encryption and green energy throughout. The deliberate absence of custom domains makes it a personal mailbox, not a business tool, and you should know that before signing up.

Our Posteo review
Posteo, founded in Berlin in 2009, is what email looks like when privacy is the product rather than a feature. There are no free accounts subsidized by advertising, no tracking, and famously no customer data: you can sign up without providing a name and pay in ways the company itself cannot connect to your account. When German authorities came asking for user data in the past, Posteo had little to hand over, and it publishes transparency reports about exactly that.
The service costs EUR 1 per month, prepaid as credit, and includes a 4 GB mailbox, two calendars, an address book with CardDAV sync, notes, and three alias addresses. Storage expands at EUR 0.25 per GB per month and aliases at EUR 0.10 each, so a comfortable 10 GB setup still costs under EUR 3. There are no tiers, no upsells and nothing to configure wrong.
The headline limitation deserves the boldest print: Posteo does not support custom domains, and never will. This is not a missing feature but a privacy decision - hosting your domain would require storing billing-relevant records tying you to it, which contradicts the no-data model. Every address you create ends in posteo.de or its sibling domains. That makes Posteo unsuitable for businesses and for anyone who wants address portability; if you leave, the address stays behind. Migadu, mailbox.org or Mailfence are the neighbors to visit for domains.
Security engineering is genuinely strong. The optional crypto mail storage encrypts your entire mailbox, calendars and contacts with your password so that Posteo cannot read stored data. Inbound and outbound TLS guarantees can hard-refuse unencrypted delivery, DANE and DNSSEC are properly deployed, and two-factor authentication is standard. Incoming mail can also be automatically PGP-encrypted with your key.
The environmental posture is more than a badge: servers run on 100% green electricity from Green Planet Energy, and the company documents its sustainability practices in unusual detail. Combined with the anonymous payment ethos, Posteo has a clear conscience-first identity that its users buy into deliberately.
Day to day, expect a competent but plain Roundcube-based webmail and reliance on standard IMAP clients, since there are no first-party mobile apps. For activists, journalists, privacy-minded individuals and anyone who wants a clean personal mailbox for a euro, Posteo is excellent. For a business identity on your own domain, it is intentionally the wrong tool.
Notable facts
- Payment is anonymized: Posteo separates payment data from accounts by design
- No custom domains as a privacy principle, not a technical gap
- Powered by 100% green electricity from Green Planet Energy since its early years

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my own domain with Posteo?
No. Posteo deliberately does not offer custom domains because doing so would require storing identifying records that link you to the domain. If owning your address matters, look at Migadu, mailbox.org or Mailfence instead.
How can Posteo be anonymous if I pay for it?
Posteo decouples payments from accounts: you top up credit and the company does not store which payment funded which mailbox. Combined with no-name signup, the provider holds almost no data about who you are.
Bottom line
Posteo is the most principled email service in Europe: EUR 1 a month, anonymous payment, full-mailbox encryption and green energy throughout. The deliberate absence of custom domains makes it a personal mailbox, not a business tool, and you should know that before signing up.
