DigitalOcean built its reputation on taking the complexity of AWS and cutting it down to what most developers actually need: a virtual machine, a fixed monthly price and clean networking.
Droplets start at $4/mo for a 512MB instance, with the popular 1GB tier at $6/mo. Billing moved to per-second granularity in 2026, so short experiments cost pennies.
The documentation library is a genuine moat - DigitalOcean tutorials rank for nearly every Linux server task, and they are consistently excellent. The Marketplace one-clicks and App Platform soften the learning curve for teams that do not want to hand-roll deployments.
This is unmanaged hosting: security patches, web server config and backups are your job. Managed databases, load balancers and Kubernetes are available as bolt-ons, but the base product assumes competence at a shell prompt.
Support on the free tier is ticket-based and can be slow; paid support plans exist for businesses that need response guarantees. Against Hetzner, the raw price-per-GB-of-RAM looks expensive, but the surrounding ecosystem is much deeper.
