Our Amazon Lightsail review
Amazon launched Lightsail in 2016 as a direct answer to DigitalOcean: a fixed-price VPS wrapper around EC2 that hides instance types, VPCs and the billing labyrinth behind a simple bundle price. You pick a plan, a region and a blueprint like WordPress or LAMP, and AWS does the rest.
The bundles are competitive at the low end: $5/mo buys 512MB RAM, 2 burstable vCPUs, 20GB SSD and a full terabyte of transfer, and the $7 1GB tier undercuts DigitalOcean's equivalent while including twice the bandwidth allowance. Most bundles are free for the first three months, an onboarding subsidy none of the independent clouds match.
The training-wheels framing cuts both ways. Lightsail deliberately caps what you can touch: CPUs are burstable T-class instances that throttle under sustained load, there are no dedicated-core plans, and advanced networking is simplified away. For a blog, a small app or a staging box, that is fine. For a hot database, the CPU credit model will eventually bite.
The egress gotcha deserves bold print. The bundled transfer allowance is generous, but overage bills at standard EC2 data-transfer rates of roughly $0.09/GB in US regions. A traffic spike or a media-heavy site that blows through its terabytes can produce a surprise bill that erases years of savings; independent clouds charge a penny per GB or simply throttle instead.
What Lightsail uniquely offers is the AWS on-ramp. Instances run in real AWS regions with 99.99% SLA-backed infrastructure, VPC peering connects Lightsail to full AWS services, and snapshots can be exported to EC2 when you outgrow the sandbox. For a developer who knows AWS is the eventual destination, starting on Lightsail avoids both bill shock and replatforming.
Note that support is the hyperscaler model: the base account only gets billing support, and technical help requires a paid AWS Support plan. Between that and the egress rates, Lightsail rewards people who read documentation and monitor dashboards, which is, after all, very AWS.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I exceed the Lightsail bandwidth allowance?
Outbound transfer beyond your bundle bills at standard EC2 egress rates, roughly $0.09/GB in US regions. Heavy overage can cost more than the instance itself, so set billing alarms.
Can I move from Lightsail to full AWS later?
Yes. Instance snapshots export to EC2, and VPC peering lets a Lightsail instance use RDS, S3 and other AWS services before you migrate. It is the intended graduation path.
Bottom line
Lightsail is AWS on training wheels: honest flat pricing, real AWS regions and one-click apps. Great if you want AWS without the bill anxiety, as long as you respect the bandwidth allowance.
