Our Vercel review

Vercel is the company behind Next.js, and that gravity shapes everything about the platform. Push a repo, and Vercel detects the framework, builds it, and deploys it to a global edge network with preview URLs for every branch. The workflow is so frictionless that most frontend teams who try it stop evaluating alternatives.

The free Hobby tier is genuinely useful: 100 GB of data transfer, a million edge requests and a million function invocations a month, with unlimited projects. The catch is the license, not the limits. Hobby is for non-commercial use only, so the moment a site earns money you are on Pro at $20 per seat per month.

Pro raises the pools to 1 TB of transfer and 10 million edge requests and includes a $20 monthly usage credit, after which everything meters: $0.15 per GB of transfer, $2 per million edge requests, per-minute build billing, per-CPU-hour function billing. This is where the famous horror stories come from. A post that hits the Hacker News front page, a misconfigured image loop, or a DDoS that slips past mitigation can turn a $20 invoice into four figures. Vercel has responded with default $200 spend caps, better alerting and more generous mitigations, but the burden of watching the meter is still yours.

On raw merit the platform is excellent. Static assets and ISR pages are served from the edge, serverless functions run in regions you choose, and observability is built into the dashboard. Next.js features like Image Optimization and Server Components work here before they work anywhere else, which is either a feature or a lock-in warning depending on your temperament.

The serverless-only architecture has real limits: no long-lived processes, websockets require workarounds, and background jobs push you toward third-party queues. Teams with conventional backend needs often pair Vercel for the frontend with Railway, Render or Fly for services.

Verdict: for frontend teams, especially Next.js shops, Vercel is the category leader and worth the premium. Price-sensitive projects and anyone allergic to metered billing should look hard at Cloudflare Pages first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the free Vercel Hobby plan for a business site?

No. The Hobby tier license is limited to personal, non-commercial projects. A site that sells anything or promotes a business needs the Pro plan at $20 per seat per month.

How do I avoid a surprise Vercel bill?

Set a spend limit in the dashboard (Pro teams get a $200 default budget), enable usage alerts, and put Cloudflare or Vercel's own firewall rules in front of anything likely to be scraped or attacked.
