Shopify Review
If the site exists to sell things, Shopify is the default answer: world-class checkout, infrastructure that shrugs off launch-day traffic, and an ecosystem nobody matches. Watch the transaction fees and the app-subscription creep.

Our Shopify review
Shopify is less a website builder than a commerce operating system that happens to include one. Every plan bundles hosting, a customizable storefront, the industry's highest-converting checkout, and back office tooling for inventory, shipping, taxes and abandoned carts. The infrastructure is genuinely elite: Shopify absorbs flash-sale traffic that would flatten a conventional host, and merchants never think about servers, scaling or PCI compliance.
Pricing on shopify.com currently lists Basic at $19 a month on yearly billing ($25 billed monthly), Grow at $49 ($65 monthly) and Advanced at $299 ($399 monthly), with Plus starting around $2,300 a month for enterprises. Every new store gets a $1-a-month promotional period for the first three months, and effectively unlimited products, storage and bandwidth on all tiers.
The fee structure is the part to read twice. Card processing through Shopify Payments runs on a sliding scale by plan; use any third-party payment provider instead and Shopify adds its own surcharge on top - 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. For most merchants the practical answer is to use Shopify Payments where it is available, at which point the extra fee disappears. The other cost creep is apps: reviews, subscriptions, advanced SEO and bundles usually mean $20 to $200+ a month in app subscriptions on top of the plan price.
Lock-in is moderate and better than most builders. Your product catalog, customer list and order history export cleanly to CSV, and mature migration paths exist to and from every major commerce platform. What you cannot take is the theme and the app configuration - the store rebuild is real work, but your business data is never hostage.
As a general-purpose website builder, Shopify is mediocre: the blog is rudimentary, non-commerce page layouts are theme-constrained, and content-heavy sites feel like they are living in a store's spare room. Plenty of brands pair a Shopify store with a separate marketing site on Webflow or Framer for exactly this reason.
The verdict is easy. For a store doing or aspiring to real volume, nothing else in the builder category is close, and the platform grows from first sale to nine figures without replatforming. If you are not selling, look elsewhere - you would be paying for a checkout you never use.
Notable facts
- Powers millions of merchants and roughly 10% of US ecommerce
- Checkout is consistently benchmarked as the highest-converting in the industry

Frequently asked questions
What are Shopify transaction fees?
If you use Shopify Payments, none beyond card processing. With a third-party payment provider, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced on top of your provider's own fees.
Can I leave Shopify with my data?
Products, customers and orders export to CSV and are importable by every major competitor. Your theme, apps and store configuration do not transfer, so the storefront itself must be rebuilt.
Bottom line
If the site exists to sell things, Shopify is the default answer: world-class checkout, infrastructure that shrugs off launch-day traffic, and an ecosystem nobody matches. Watch the transaction fees and the app-subscription creep.
