Best for cheap cPanel hosting with unlimited email

HostGator Review

7.0/ 10 - our editorial score

HostGator is a serviceable budget pick with real cPanel and unlimited email, but the steep renewal jump and so-so performance mean you should go in with eyes open.

Our HostGator review

HostGator built its name in the 2000s on unlimited everything and rock-bottom prices, and the modern lineup still leans on that formula: $3.75/mo gets you 10 sites, unmetered bandwidth and unlimited email addresses on a standard cPanel install.

The catch is the renewal cliff. Hatchling renews at $10.99/mo on another 36-month term, and shorter renewal terms cost more still - Business goes from $6.25 to $21.99/mo. Over a six-year horizon HostGator is not the cheap option it appears to be on day one.

Like Bluehost, HostGator belongs to Newfold Digital, the rebranded EIG. Longtime customers widely report that support and performance declined after the 2012 acquisition, and while things have stabilized, HostGator no longer competes at the top on either speed or service.

What it still does well: cPanel is the real thing rather than a proprietary dashboard, which matters if you ever want to move hosts or manage email, cron jobs and databases directly. Shared plans include weekly courtesy backups and a free migration for new accounts.

Performance in independent tests is consistently middle of the pack. SSD storage is standard but there is no NVMe tier, no LiteSpeed, and datacenters are US-only, so audiences elsewhere will see slower response times.

Choose HostGator if you want familiar cPanel hosting at the lowest possible first-term price and plan to reassess at renewal. Pricing here was cross-checked against HostGator's pages and third-party price trackers on the review date.

Frequently asked questions

Does HostGator still have a 45-day money-back guarantee?

No. HostGator currently advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee on shared hosting.

What does HostGator cost after the first term?

Renewal depends on the term you renew on. Hatchling renews at $10.99/mo on a 36-month term but around $13.19/mo on a 12-month term.

Bottom line

HostGator is a serviceable budget pick with real cPanel and unlimited email, but the steep renewal jump and so-so performance mean you should go in with eyes open.
